The initial assessment is a comprehensive process that identifies a baseline of your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. After services start, your BCBA® monitors your child’s progress and makes changes to their program as needed during weekly supervision sessions. Your child will receive a formal re-evaluation by the BCBA® every 6 months.
Therapy sessions are based upon the number of hours your Board Certified Behavior Analyst® recommends as part of the treatment plan. Sessions will range from 2 to 5 hours based on the needs of the individual child and the associated treatment goals your BCBA® and yourself have created together.
A typical ABA intervention involves 20-40 hours a week of direct therapy for 1-3 years, however, the specific number of hours and/or length of treatment will vary based on each child’s individual needs. Our clinicians take a customized approach to services and do not use “cookie cutter” recommendations. For more information, please contact us for an individualized assessment.
At Move Up ABA, we usually provide therapy in the client’s own home or school. Therapy is implemented by a team of professionals, including Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs) and Registered Behavioral Technicians® (RBTs).
A BCBA® (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is a highly trained professional who uses the science-based approach of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to understand and change behavior.
BCBAs are dedicated to helping people with developmental differences reach their full potential with kindness, compassion, and expertise. BCBAs guide and supervise Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT®s) to create and implement individualized plans to help clients achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. They monitor progress closely to make sure that the plan is working and make changes as needed.
To become a BCBA®, one needs to have a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related field, complete supervised experience hours, and pass a certification exam. In some locations, there may also be additional requirements.
An RBT® (Registered Behavior Technician) is a warm and compassionate member of a clinical team who works with people who have autism or other developmental differences. An RBT® works under the supervision and guidance of a BCBA® (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) to carry out the therapy plan, teaching new skills to their clients and improving their behaviors through ABA therapy.
An ABA session usually starts out with the RBT® building a connection with your child by engaging in their favorite activities. Then, the RBT® will alternate between structured and unstructured activities that are child-led and play-based to target the goals in the treatment plan. The RBT® will also collect data on your child’s progress which allows the BCBA® to monitor progress. Each session is tailored to your child- planned with careful consideration of their therapy goals, progressing abilities and even their favorite activities!
That’s the goal! ABA sessions are focused around play and are filled with positive reinforcement so that your child stays motivated to learn. We do not use any punishment techniques and we keep therapy centered around activities that are child-led and play-based.
Yes, you can! Parent and family involvement in the treatment planning for a child with autism is very important. You know your child best and your family’s goals for your child will be incorporated into the therapy treatment plan. Also, it is important for parents/caregivers to learn the strategies that are used by our BCBA® and RBT®s so they can best support their child when we are not in session. When this happens, the child’s new skills can be applied in other areas and their progress maintained for years to come!
We provide ABA therapy in home-based, school-based and community based settings across Maryland and Indiana.
