If you are studying for this exam right now, you have probably seen four different numbers for the passing score on four different websites. Most of them trace back to a figure the Behavior Analyst Certification Board has never published. This guide sticks to what the BACB actually documents in the current RBT Handbook, the Test Content Outline, and its annual testing data, so you can stop chasing contradictions and start studying. How Many Questions Are on the RBT Exam?
The RBT examination contains 85 multiple-choice questions: 75 scored questions and 10 unscored questions. Each question has four possible answers and only one correct answer, and candidates have 90 minutes to finish. The 10 unscored items are pilot questions the BACB is testing for future forms. They are scattered through the exam and are not labeled, so treat all 85 as if they count.
Every question carries the same weight, and your result is based on your overall performance rather than your performance in any single content area.
As of January 1, 2026, the exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which replaced the 2nd-edition Task List. It contains 43 tasks across six content areas, distributed like this:

Behavior Acquisition is the heaviest section at a quarter of the scored exam, so prompting, chaining, discrete-trial teaching, shaping, token economies, and tacting procedures deserve the largest share of your study time. Ethics is a close second in terms of how often candidates underestimate it: 11 scored questions is more than Behavior Assessment and nearly as many as Data Collection.
One note on timing. The 90 minutes includes reviewing the terms and conditions, the navigation tutorial, and load time, and any break you take runs on your own clock. Plan for roughly a minute per question with no real cushion.
What Is the Passing Score?
This is where most published guidance goes wrong. The BACB does not release a passing percentage, a minimum number of correct answers, or a scaled passing score for the RBT exam.
Here is what it does say. The passing score is set using the modified Angoff method, a criterion-referenced process in which a panel of BACB-certified subject matter experts establishes the standard and the BACB Board of Directors approves it. A new passing score is set whenever something significant changes, such as a new test content outline. Your result does not depend on how other candidates performed the same day.
Because multiple exam forms are in circulation and each is statistically equated for difficulty, the actual number of correct answers required to pass can differ from form to form, which is why the BACB does not report the raw number answered correctly. Candidates who pass receive notice that they passed and nothing more. Candidates who fail receive a report listing the RBT tasks on which they answered items incorrectly, intended to guide further study.
So the honest answer to “how many can I miss” is that nobody outside the BACB knows, and the number is not fixed. The practical takeaway for studying: stop aiming at a threshold and aim at mastery. If you are consistently scoring in the mid-80s or higher on full-length practice exams that mirror the six-domain split above, you are in good shape. And if you are hovering near a number you read on a prep site, you are optimizing for the wrong target.

What Is the RBT Exam Pass Rate?
The BACB publishes pass rates every year in its annual data report. Here are the last five years:

In 2025, 109,341 candidates sat for the exam for the first time and 75 percent passed, while 54,674 retake candidates produced a 38 percent pass rate.
Two things are worth pulling out of that table. First, first-time candidates pass at roughly double the rate of retakers, so your first attempt is genuinely your best one. Second, the pass rate slid from 83 percent in 2021 to 73 percent in 2024 before ticking back up, while volume more than doubled. Preparation quality varies widely across training programs, and the BACB publishes pass rates by training provider for programs with at least 10 first-time candidates. Passing also puts you in position to do the actual work: running programs, collecting data, and supporting ABA therapy for children under a BCBA’s direction.
What Happens If You Do Not Pass the RBT Exam?
You get your result at the testing center before you leave, so there is no waiting period to find out. If you fail, a retake application appears in your BACB portal account within 48 hours, and you will receive an examination authorization email within 48 hours of submitting it.
The rules that matter:
- Attempt limit. You may take the exam a maximum of eight times total within the 12-month period following your initial application approval. There is no unlimited retake policy, despite what several older guides claim.
- Waiting period. You must wait seven days after an attempt before testing again.
- Cost. A retake application currently carries no BACB fee, but Pearson VUE charges $45 for every exam appointment. The initial BACB certification application processing fee is $65.
- After eight failed attempts. If you use all eight attempts and time still remains in your authorization window, you must wait for that 12-month period to end before reapplying.
Use the failure report. It lists the specific tasks you missed, which is more actionable than a percentage would be. Rebuild your study plan around those tasks rather than rereading everything, but do not abandon the domains you scored well on, since the item pool rotates between forms.

Is 200 out of 250 the RBT passing score?
That figure circulates widely but does not appear in the current RBT Handbook or on the BACB’s examination information page. The RBT exam result is reported as pass or fail. The BACB explains scaled scoring in general terms across its three credentials, but it does not publish a scaled passing score for the RBT exam, and it does not give passing candidates a numeric score at all.
How soon do I get my results?
Immediately. You receive your pass or fail result at the testing center, and if you pass, the BACB emails a certification letter with your certification number within roughly 24 hours.
Does the exam use the new RBT Task List?
Yes. The exam is built on the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), effective January 1, 2026. Candidates test under whichever edition is current when they schedule, and if a new edition takes effect during an active authorization period, the candidate must test under the new one with no exceptions. Study materials built on the 2nd-edition Task List are out of date.
How is the passing score actually calculated?
Subject matter experts rate each question’s difficulty, a cut score is set for each base form, and forms are statistically equated so that a harder form does not disadvantage you. Base forms are rebuilt roughly every five years or whenever the content changes significantly.
Am I certified the moment I pass?
No. Your certification begins as inactive. It becomes active only once your RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee in their BACB portal account. From there you are responsible for monthly supervision requirements and for knowing how to calculate supervision hours correctly.
How much of the exam is ethics?
Eleven scored questions, 15 percent of the exam. Everything tested maps to the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), and the ethics standards RBTs follow day to day are the same ones the exam asks about in scenario form.
